Art Museum HW

Name: Pablo Picasso
Title: The Rower
Date: 1910
Materials: Oil on Canvas
Size: 28 3/8 x 23 1/2

The piece that I chose at the MFA was, The Rower by Pablo Picasso. This piece is 28 3/8 x 23 1/2. It was an oil painting done on a canvas. This painting contained lots of copper, white, gold, silver, dark brown, black, cream, grey, light brown, and navy blue colors. Personlly, I thought from first sight that the piece was rather weird, but being that it was a painting by Picasso, weird seems to be the norm in some of his paintings, which is a reason why I choose this piece. From just staring at the picture I could not make out what exactly the picture was dipicting, but it wasn't until I took a picture of it that I realized what it was. I actually thought that it was much more visually easier to see it in picture rather than in person.
I believe this piece by Picasso to be an abstract piece. At first it was very hard for me to identify whether its was abstract or non-representational, but after looking at it more closely and doing some research on the piece I came to the conclusion that this piece is abstract. If you look at the picture carefully you will see that Picasso is portraying a seated woman. Apparently, from reasearch, around the time that Picasso painted this portrait, it was a pivotal moment in Cubist painting, so the painting as a cubist background to it.

  1. Its interesting that you did not see the figure in the painting until you looked at the photograph. Maybe the fact that a photo flattens things out made it easier to see, you weren't distracted by textures and lines. - great post
