Vincent van Gogh
Dutch, 1853-1890
The Rocks
1888
oil on canvas
21 5/8x 25 7/8 inches

My trip to MFAH was quite and experience this was my firt time thier so this picture interestead me the most it is aboout van Gogh's impression of a windblown, craggy site just outside the villiage of Arles in southern France painting was a struggle for Vincent.van Gogh, because the fierce ,blustering winds that swept through the region whipped  violently against his canvases.Van Gogh's own creative energy leaps outward through his vigorous  rich variety of brush strokes,in unmixed colorsof greens, blues and yellows the artiste capture the various textures of smooth rock face, dry flowers, grassy stems and vast sky. The elements are woventogether by the forcefulway he applied the paint to the canvas the style makes his work recognizables.Vincent Van Gogh's signature brushwork and his expressive use of color deeply effected the suceeding generation of painters. Theo van Gogh, the artiste brother, was so taken by this painting that he immediately frame it and hung it beside The Sower, another of van Gogh's masterppiecess.

  1. Great formal analysis of the painting, can you go more into detail about your own personal interpretation of the meaning of the artwork? Remember that there are no wrong answers here as long as you prove the meaning with things that you see in the art. Like what the colors Van Gogh choose to use may mean, or the lines etc.
