Aesthetics

Decorative Figure on an Ornamental Background by Henri Matisse

This episode really seemed to focus on the aesthetics of art. The artists do not seemed interested in showing the audience life-like paintings of beauty, but instead focus on the shapes, colors, and overall feel of the work. They do not want to show you the art, they want you to feel it. I enjoyed Matisse's work for its lively colors and simple decorative qualities. I felt that his description of his art being like a nice comfortable arm chair in which a busy business man could come to at the end of the day and unwind was perfect for his work. Its art that one can just enjoy and not have to think about it.

  1. Isn't that such a great quote by Matisse? I love it too, and I think that it may have caused people to not take him seriously as an artist. But I tend to think that pleasure and beauty are very important in this life and Matisse just happened to be serious about beauty.
